Graters Knowledge Base
Does anyone have a trick for cleaning cheese graters? I live in an apartment without a dishwasher and I'm looking for a trick to help me clean my box-grater and my microplane graters. I'm familiar with the concept of elbow-grease, but I'm wondering if anyone has a method for cleaning these devices easily without having to spend too much time scrubbing and scrubbing and destroying sponges. Any help? I also realize that it's technically off-topic here, but if anyone would have an answer, it would be you guys. Thanks.
Help me find those CHEESE GRATERS from about 20 years ago? My parents had this cheese grater that was ALL Stainless Steal, suction mount, and various SS drums that cut the cheese in a rotary fashion. It was probably manufactured in the 70's or early 80's and for the life of me I can't find one to buy like it. Let me know where i can find one.

I know it is completly and totally irrational but does anyone else know how I feel? I don't even like when people make jokes about them...strange fears anyone?
What is the best cheese grater you have used or seen (not a finger or nail grater) and one that is easy clean. I use the traditional one that has different blades on four sides but always end up grating myself with it. I have also tried a mouli type but that doesn't grate very well and is difficult to clean. I have tried a mandolin type but that doesnt grate, it only slices and chips and doesn't do the last half centimeter. I also have a food processor but that is a pig to clean and doesn't grate the last bit either. Is there any new fangled, or old fashioned one you could recommend please.
Who invented the cheesegrater? Who invented the cheese grater, and when was it invented? Ive looked all over for the answer to my question. I don't mean the Parmesan cheese grater, mind you, that is a very specialized sort of cheese grater. I want to know about cheese graters in general.
road graters? Why do road graters have front wheels that can be tilted over, sometimes it looks like up to 45 degrees?
What are good ways to distress a pair of jeans? I'm making a tote bag out of the top of a large pair of jeans and I want to distress them to make them look....more my style I've already done taken bleach and a cheese grater to them so what else can I do?
How do you make coconut flakes? I have already opened and peeled a mature coconut. How do I make coconut flakes to enjoy as a snack? I don't have a grater of any kind. Do I have to sweeten? Also, how long will this last unrefrigerated? It's still raw and refrigerated.
Why are some people so ignorant when it comes to tipping? I am a server at the Olive Garden. I served 2 ladies, and 1 of their sons. They ordered 3 drinks (3 soft drinks with free refills/not water), 1 glass of wine, (5!) entrees, 2 appetizers, and the usual salad and breadsticks that come with the meal. I gave them 4 free wine samples each. I brought their food remarkably fast (I only had 2 other tables). But they asked for 3 extra scoops of dressing on the salad, with 3 extra salad dressing cups on the side. 1$ person didn't want olives on her salad, so I brought out extra olives for the 2 others who wanted it in cups on the side (since there was no room on their table for another salad). They asked for so much cheese that I had to use 2 FULL cheese graters for the salad alone. I refilled the drinks 3 times, and even boxed the salad and breadsticks, even though I am not obliged to do so since it is unlimited, and only the entree is required to go in the box. In short, I gave great service. The bill came to 87.00 and they left 6.50. Why? I'm not great at math, but I added it, and they left me about 7.5%. I worked my butt off for an hour and catered to their every whim. It took seven minutes standing at the table explaining every dish.... I just want to know WHY?!? I was very pleasant, as I always am. I take pride in my appearance (cleanliness, getting my uniform pressed, etc). I treat all customers the same, even if I think they won't tip well (and for the record, I thought this table would tip well considering the amount of money they spent and the work that was done). I LOVE my job, but I am very saddened when people don't have the courtesy to leave even 10% (which can be attributed to ignorance... anything less than 10 is just plain cheap and rude), and I appreciate it, even though the norm is 15-20%. For instance, if someone orders a meal that is 10.00 and leaves me a dollar, I don't take offense. They might be: financially challenged, ignorant, etc... at least they tried. I live in the South; I expect that. But in this situation, that wasn't the case. I went OUT OF MY WAY to make their dining experience outstanding. I tip the bussers/bartenders 15% of my tips (even if I didn't use them) Why cannot they extend the same courtesy to me? Ahhh!!
Can anyone share any tips for using a kitchen mandolin? I got one from Pampered Chef last year, and have only used the cheese grater part. What else should I be using it for? I'm sure it's really handy... I just need to get into the habit of using it more. What do you use yours for? How do you shred lettuce or cabbage? I have a flat blade, a ripple blade, a cheese shredder blade... and one other one that I can't remember. Which blade, how do you do it? Thanks~
where can i get a spaetzle maker? I want to buy one of those spaetzle makers that looks kind of like a cheese grater....any ideas? i live in victoria, australia and don't want to buy one online! Thanks in advance
How long is whole nutmeg usable? I want to buy some spices online, but nutmeg is by the pound at the places I looked. I have a nutmeg grater so thought maybe I could get the whole ones. Still, a pound is a LOT. Can I have them for years? (tried getting some people together on my Freecycle cafe site to split an order, but no takers)
What should I do if I have poison ivy on my butt? Should I scratch it with my fingernails, or scrape it off with a cheese grater or something of the sort? Or should I just spend the extra money and see a doctor? If I go with the second choice, what do you recommend I do with the finely shredded "cheese"? Will it be edible, or no? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
