Graters

what are the 4 different sides on a cheese grater used for?

I have always used the one side for shredding cheese for nachos and pizza and wondered what the remaining 3 sides could be used for.

  1. If you are using the grater I am thinking of... one side is to make slices and then the other 3 sides is for different kinds of grating. The one with the really tiny bumps is for grated cheese (like the Kraft Parmesean in the green tin). The other two are for shredding. One is a smaller shred and the larger one is for a thicker shred.
  2. Box graters are good for grating citrus peels & whole spices like nutmeg; and grating/shredding/coarse slicing veggies like carrots, potatoes & onions
  3. Different cuts and textures. Like if you want finely shredded carrot for spring rolls or zucchini for bread. Or for salad you want a coarser grate. I just depends on what size you need for what dish you're making.
  4. as above you can also use the small one for fine zesting citrus fruits. i use them all the time for that, just dont go too far into the fruit that you get the bitter white part.
