No! i do it all the time if its a block of hard butter and im making a cake or biscuits or something were the butter/lard has to be soft! i sometimes use chocolate and grate it.. the grated chocolate is gorogeous on top of icream

I'm pretty sure it's not illegal. I guess you could use one on butter if you froze the butter first although I can't imagine why you'd want to.
