Can canned Parmesan cheese be used in a recipe instead of fresh Parmesan?
I've never used fresh Parmesan cheese before and most recipes call for grated Parmesan cheese, can I use the powdery kind that comes in a cardboard container? I want to make Chicken Parmesan and it calls for grated Parmesan cheese.

- use dha fresh kind itll turn out better --mookie*
- Try to make sure it is 100% parmesan only, but you should be okay.
- Absolutely use the fresh stuff. It is not anything close to the crap that comes in the can. We are talking night and day here.
- Use the fresh simply b/c it will be better, but i dont think it matters
- Emsam, I suppose if that's all you got, you can use it. Personally I don't use that package muck, I like to grate my own or get the cheese and cold meet section do it for me when I get big quantity. Chris
- Yes, you can use it, but you will be sacrificing quality. The "REAL" thing is expensive though, and can be a bit salty. It's okay to use either for that recipe. Just use some Mozzarella as well to make it extra cheesy.
- it can, but the quality of your food would be taking a nosedive
- i have used both. /////////////////////////////////
