Can I use parmesan cheese in the can or should I buy the finely shredded kind?
I am making lasagna and the recipe calls for finely shredded parmesan cheese. Thank you.

- It won't matter use what you have. It's not that huge of a difference.
- pumpkins.
- i guess it would be better to use finely shredded parasean cheese but use what u have it doesnt make a whole lot of a diffrence.
- Personally, I think the finely shredded kind is by far the better cheese. Cheese in the can doesn't taste fresh, and very often you end up with lots of hard grainy cheese things all over. Fresh shredded has a much better taste and texture. Best wishes..I'm sure your lasagna will be yummy!
- You may use what do you have now.But I think if use can Parmesan it will take little time to make it melt but it will need more Parmesan can.
- Use what you have. Fresh grated is always better, but in a sauce like that you can get away with using the canned kind.
- The canned stuff is fine for lasagna. The fresh shredded stuff is more for topping things like bruschetta.
- It does make a huge difference..the finely shredded melts into the lasagna, while the powdered becomes a glob of mess..it doesnt cost much more for the shredded good stuff!!!!
- As soon as you shred cheese, especially Parmesan, it starts to lose flavor. Also, what you buy in a can or pre-shredded are inferior products. Buy a wedge of either Wisconsin Parmesan or, preferably, Italian Parmesan and grate it yourself. Much better.
