Is parmesan cheese a good substitute for gruyere?

i live in a small town and i don't have a way to get to a larger store so will parmesan work?

  1. I think it will be fine! they say gruyere tastes like parmesan and swiss had a baby....so if you have swiss just mix em!
  2. I think Swiss cheese would be a better substitute than parmesan. It has more of the same flavor and melts more like gruyere. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````
  3. Yes, it's very close in taste and will amalgamate into sauces easier too.
  4. Depends on what you are making. If you are making onion soup, fondu, or quiche, use swiss, fontina or emmenthaler. I do buy an aged gruyere that is very hard and has similar characteristics of a good parm, so there are some instances where it would be appropriate too.
