Does Parmesan Cheese spoil? I have the kind you buy off the shelf in the grocery store, should it be chilled? I noticed that if you leave it out it turns orange, i'm assuming that's a bad thing...

  1. Mine turns blue green after a long while. No thanks. Into the trash can.
  2. Yes...That's y there's an expiration date.
  3. Keep it refrigerated, never leave it out. It should be good for up to 6 months.
  4. I keep it chilled, however the other people in my house leave it out all the time and it seems to be ok. There was ONE time when Parmesan cheese went bad and I didn't notice until I poured it all over my speghetti. But that was on Guam and everything over there spoils.
  5. If it shows green it's bad. You need to include parmesan more often into your diet if you intend to keep it around.
  6. my can says refrigerate after opening
  7. yes it would not hurt I put mine in fridge
  8. Blue or green on your cheese, Parmesan or any other, means it has gotten moldy. And I suggest that you buy "moldy" cheese, it's not reccomendable to make it at home. :D Your Parmesan turned orange. I don't know if there's a mold of that color, but if you ask me - better safe than sorry. So, you better keep your cheese in the fridge, wrapped up in plastic bag or in the plastic box. Of course, when there was no refrigeration, people kept cheese in a kind of cheese cellars, wrapped up in oiled linen. I suppose that the oil prevented the action of air. And those cellars were relatively cool and dark rooms. Very much like fridges. So, keep your food refrigerated.
  9. read the container. It should say on the back or bottom, and there is an experation date.
