- yes that will work..
- yes but you will want to soak the shredded potatoes in water for a bit to get rid of some of the starch :)
- that's how i make mine! just be sure to cook them on a medium heat. If too hot they will burn and still be raw on the inside!
- That's really all you need. You also need an oil of some type. My preference is EVOO, but it depends on your taste. Avocado oil can be pretty tasty, too, if you can find it. All you need to do it heat some oil in a pan over medium heat then drop the shredded potatoes in. In my experience, people tend to mess it up here, though. Don't touch them. Leave the hashbrowns for at least 3-5 minutes, maybe longer (it all depends). If you stir them around, you wind up with oil-coated potato string, which is just gross. Once the bottom has reached a nice, deep brown, flip the hashbrowns (treating them as a single disk) over and leave them for around 5 minutes (maybe longer--this all depends on your stove). Voila! Hashbrowns. The secret, like I said, is to kind of treat them like a pancake (though they are not a potato pancake proper). I would imagine a brief drop in a deep fryer might work quite well, but I have not tried this. At the worst, though, you'd end up with potato strings, which are a very delicious snack food.
- I used to use a simple box grater available in most grocery stores. Scrub your potatoes or peel them. Grate the potatoes. Let them drain on paper towels to absorb most of the moisture. Add some minced onion if you like. Fry them in a little oil. Season with salt and pepper. If your cheese grater won't handle potatoes, all isn't lost. Just cut your potatoes into thin slices and then dice them.
- HASH BROWN POTATOES 2 lb. pkg. frozen hash brown potatoes 1/4 lb. butter 1 can cream of chicken soup 1/2 to 1 c. shredded Cheddar cheese 1 pt. (16 oz.) sour cream Salt and pepper Crushed corn flakes Mix soup, cheese, and sour cream. Place hash browns in greased 9 x 13 inch pan. Pour soup and cheese mixture over top. Sprinkle crushed corn flakes over top of soup and cheese mixture, covering well. Melt butter and drizzle over corn flakes. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Nice dish to take to covered dish dinners.
- That's what you need - potatoes and a cheese grater. What you do is boil the potatoes first (I usually do this the night before), then, grate them. Put oil in your frying pan or griddle and then scoop up a couple of hand fulls of shredded potatoes and press them together to make a patty. Fry on both sides until golden brown.
- Its tough. You gotta try a lot. to get it right. Boil a large pan of water..I am in Denver and that takes longer. Lengthwise cut the taters in half and half again. I say one potato per person. A lot of effort so you might as well. I bring to boil for 9 min. Then strain and rinse with cold water. Then potatoe back in pan of ice water for ten minutes to cool so that you can handel them for shredding. Shred with peal towards your palm and potato towards plate. Get it down to peal and then move on. the peal will protect your fingers. 1tsp oil and 1tsp butter in large preheated med-hi temp pan for every one potatato. Sounds like a lot and its not. Thats why they are good. Fry ...for 10 min. on med. heat. then flip. 5 min. then flip back. wait 2 then pull and serve. It is worth it. But watch a greasy spoon's cook and see how many hashbrowns he has working before you sit down. Its not whats ordered; its what he predicting. Anyways...I season with pinch of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Oh yeah,i made them the other day with Yukon Gold taters, put garlic and peper,i got the canola oil super hot, then back the heat off a bit, dumped the shreds of taters in and made a big one by forming it with a spatula and it will turn into a hash brown, when it's all like glued together flip it,cook on medium heat.If you have no oil margerine or butter will work too.Plus heres some recipes to. http://allrecipes.com/Search/Recipes.aspx?WithTerm=hash+browns
